Maintaining your Computer

This information is applicable to maintaining your home/office computer. If you use a computer from your work place, the Tasmanian Skills Institute or a library it is their responsibility to maintain the computer. Below are some basic tasks to ensure that your computer is running correctly.

Make Sure Your Home/Office Computer

Software is Up To Date

Updating a Computer Running Windows

If you use a computer with windows you should use Windows Update regularly to ensure that Microsoft Windows and Internet Explorer are up-to-date and secure. You can follow this link to use Windows Update.

Updating an Apple Macintosh

If your computer is an Apple Macintosh you should regularly use Apples Software Update tool to ensure that programs such as Safari are up-do-date.

Updating Mozilla Firefox

If you use Mozilla Firefox as your Web Browser you can upgrade it from the Mozilla web site

Make sure you have an Antivirus Program

For A Computer Running Windows

If you're a Windows user you can download a free antivirus program from Microsoft called Security Essentials. You can get it from here http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

For an Apple Macintosh

Viruses are very uncommon on a Macintosh so most users never bother with antivirus software.
